Cowboys Great Jethro Pugh Dies At Age 70
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - One of the all time great Dallas Cowboys players has passed.
Jethro Pugh who played defensive tackle for the team from 1965-78 has died at the age of 70.
Pugh attended Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina and was drafted by the Cowboys in 1965.
He led the club in sacks for five consecutive seasons (1968-72). His 14 seasons with the team is tied for fourth in club history.
Former Cowboy great Lee Roy Jordan remembers his former teammate and friend. "He was one of the best people I've ever known," said Jordan. "He was one of the greatest teammates that a guy could have."
Pugh, an unsung member of the "Doomsday Defense", played alongside Hall of Famer Bob Lilly in that 21-17 Dallas loss, the infamous 'Ice Bowl', that sent the Packers to the Super Bowl.
"This is a sad day for Cowboys fans, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Jethro's family," said Dallas Cowboys Owner and General Manager Jerry Jones. "He was loved and appreciated by his teammates and Cowboys fans for decades, and his spirit will be felt when our team travels to Green Bay this weekend."
Pugh played all 13-years of his career with the Cowboys and was on two Super Bowl winning squads.
