Dallas County Reports First West Nile Virus Death

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas County Health and Human Services said Monday a Carrollton resident has died of West Nile Virus.
It's the first such death of 2016 in Dallas County.
The resident, who lived in the 75006 zip code was in the 60s age range, and had been diagnosed with West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease.
DCHHS did not provide any other details on the victim for privacy reasons.
The City of Carrollton says Carrollton Animal Services conducted ground-based spraying in the area where the victim lived on Tuesday, July 19, the same day the illness was reported.
This area was also in last week's positive testing zone and retreated on Wednesday, August 3 and Thursday, August 4.
West Nile Virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.
Severe WNV infections can cause neurologic complications such as encephalitis.
Milder symptoms include fever, headache and muscle aches.
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for WNV.
