Dallas Council To Vote On Alamo Drafthouse

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Downtown Dallas is now one step closer to getting a new movie theater. Another Alamo Drafthouse could be open before the holidays this year. However, there is still one more hurdle. The Dallas City Council has the final say, and that vote is still a few weeks away.
The city's economic development committee on Monday morning gave the Austin company a green light. The two-story movie theater would be placed in a new building right at the corner of Interstate-30 and South Lamar Street. It is set to seat about 1,000 moviegoers.
The new movie theater would cost about $18 million and be paid for using city grants.
The new theater could point to a revival of the downtown area. There are also plans for new apartment buildings, shops and restaurants. "More folks will experience the theaters, but I think this will be good for the neighborhood," stated city council member Adam Medrano. "They can walk to a movie theater, walk to restaurants and enjoy the quality of life."
Once approved by the Dallas City Council -- the topic is set to be addressed on April 22 -- construction on the theater is expected to begin in May.
The popular Austin company already has a DFW location in Richardson. There are also plans to bring the theater chain to Little Elm and Las Colinas.
