DALLAS (CBSDFW) - If a person is caught carrying marijuana in Dallas County, police officers may soon skip taking the person to jail in favor of a ticket.

The Dallas city council's safety committee talked Tuesday about the idea which would apply only to Dallas County residents who are busted carrying just a small amount of marijuana.

Police chief David Brown has mixed feelings on the proposal but admits it sounds practical.

The new approach would allow police officers to spend more time on the street and also free up more jail cells for violent offenders.

The full city council will consider the idea at an upcoming meeting.
