CVS Near Dallas School Wants To Sell Alcohol

DALLAS (CBS11) - At the busy Dallas intersection of Lovers Lane and Inwood, choices abound. Banks, clothing, restaurants and alcohol.

The Inwood Tavern sits across the street from Pogo's Wine and Spirits. 30 feet on asphalt separate Pogo's from CVS Pharmacy. But the pharmacy has a product restriction not applied to its neighbors. No beer or wine can be sold inside the drug store.

Based on Dallas City Code, businesses that sell alcohol must be at least 300 feet from a school or childcare facility.

The pharmacy sits within that boundary, but has requested a variance approval from the Dallas City Council. "It doesn't make sense to me," said resident Mackenzie Beecherl.

Beecherl viewed the parking lot separation between the one store selling alcohol and the pharmacy prohibited from doing the same. "They can go right across the street and buy the same thing. It doesn't make any sense to me," she said.

A variance approval gives the pharmacy clearance to sell wine and beer, despite its proximity to Longfellow Academy School. The school sits to the south of the pharmacy.

Dallas ISD officials say they haven't made an official assessment on the variance request.

The Dallas City Council takes up the matter September 22.
