AUSTIN (AP) - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz says the organizers who hoped to bolster Democrats have been turned back with a resounding and familiar message: "Don't mess with Texas."

Cruz spoke Tuesday night at the victory party of Governor-elect Greg Abbott, who headlined a Republican sweep of Texas' statewide offices. Cruz said Abbott "has the heart of a lion."

Cruz worked for Abbott in the Texas attorney general's office, and the two remain close friends and political allies.

Speaking of what he called the Texas ethos, Cruz said: "Give me a horse and a gun and an open plain and we can conquer the world."
