PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - The price of water continues to go up around North Texas and now criminals are trying to take advantage of it.

Both Plano Police and the city's water department  are concerned about unsolicited calls homeowners are getting. And those calls are demanding immediate payment for overdue water bills in an effort to scam hundreds of dollars from the victims.

Kirk Bui's family in Plano received a call a few days ago claiming to be from the city's water department. The caller told the Bui's that they owed $700 for an overdue water bill.

The Bui's might have paid if they weren't already signed up for automatic billing which made them suspicious. "I feel angry but it's out of my hands I just learned not to pay anything over the phone," says Bui.

Police and the water department are concerned that someone will be taken advantage of and want to make sure homeowners know that they will never call asking for bill payments.
