Crime spree in Austin and San Antonio leaves 6 people dead, 3 injured
AUSTIN – A man is in police custody and has been charged with capital murder after a deadly crime spree in Austin and San Antonio that left at least six people dead and three people hurt, including two police officers.
Austin police say Tuesday morning, an Austin ISD police officer was shot outside a high school in northeast Austin.
A little over an hour later, a man and woman were killed in south Austin.
Then, a man on a bike was shot yesterday afternoon but survived.
Tuesday night, a second police officer was shot when officers responded to a burglary call, where police later found two more people dead. Both of the police officers are expected to recover.
Police say the suspect, 34-year-old Shane James led police on a high-speed chase before being taken into custody.
Two of the victims who were killed at a home in San Antonio are believed to be the suspect's parents, authorities said Wednesday.
James was charged with capital murder in Travis County. More charges are expected to come, Interim Austin Police Chief Robin Henderson said.
Authorities in Bexar County are waiting to bring charges for either murder or capital murder, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Wednesday.
An Army spokesperson told CBS News that James was in the Army for two years. He was an infantry officer from February 2013 to August 2015, when he left the Army as a first lieutenant. Salazar said Wednesday there was a "domestic violence incident of some sort" that had "something to do with" why he left the military but did not elaborate.
There's no word yet on a motive for the crime spree.
