Crews In Granbury Working To Make Giant Sinkhole Bigger

GRANBURY (CBSDFW.COM) - Rain and storms over the weekend resulted in a giant sinkhole opening up in Granbury. As crews continue to work in the area their job now is to make the crater bigger.
Granbury Assistant City Manager Sheri Campbell-Husband explained, "They've actually had to widen to hole. It's now about 60 feet -- it was about 40 on Sunday and it's now about 60. They've widened it for a variety of reasons."
A broken underground storm drain caused the ground to start falling in on Sunday. It was kind of a domino effect with the eight-foot storm drain collapse blocking the storm sewer system. The result meant there was nowhere for the rainwater to go and the earth washed out around a lift station, creating the giant hole and causing the station to sink.
Campbell-Husband gave some of the reasons why crews are now making the hole bigger. "To make sure we're exposing all the infrastructure that might need to be repaired and to do soil sampling, to make sure that we're getting the proper advice about what kind of fill material needs to be put back there."
The ground gave way just outside a Brookshire's grocery store parking lot, but Campbell-Husband said that is the only location that has been negatively impacted. "That store has been affected -- in terms of there's a big, giant hole in their parking lot. There ended up being no interruption of service to any residents or businesses. There weren't any backups or problems."
Officials are still trying to figure out how to move forward. The question is whether to repair the culvert by lining it or replacing it.
Continuing rain has also hampered repairs and possible showers are in the forecast through the weekend.
