Crews Battle Apartment Fire In Everman
EVERMAN (CBSDFW.COM) - Emergency crews responded a three-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Everman on Thursday morning. Firefighters were first called just after 5:30 a.m. to a two-story building located in the the 1800 block of Everman Parkway.
Heavy smoke and flames were showing as crews pulled up to the scene at the Oakwood Terrace Apartments in Tarrant County, south of Fort Worth. Residents were evacuated as workers started fighting the blaze.
Randy Sanders, director of Everman's emergency services, said that the fire is believed to have started in the northwest corner of the building's top floor. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but one person reported seeing an arsonist flee from the scene. An arson investigator will determine if that is true.
Officials did have to block off some surrounding roadways in order to battle the fire. Efforts to extinguish the blaze are still underway, but the flames have died down significantly. The entire building -- made up of 24 apartment units -- has been destroyed.
The American Red Cross arrived at the scene to help those residents who were impacted by the fire. Spokeswoman Anita Foster stated that 60 people were displaced, most wearing little more than their pajamas. The American Red Cross is offering these residents shoes, socks and warm clothes, and providing a location for them to stay warm and grab a bite to eat. Families will receive additional help as needed.
Two people received minor injuries during this incident. One victim was treated for burns and the other person had hurt knees after jumping out of a window. A third victim was taken to the hospital as a precaution due to a prior disability.
