DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) - Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has received a bit of flack for his recent support of Greg Hardy following his outburst during the loss to the NY giants.
Jones joined 105.3 The Fan for his weekly show and explained how committed he and the team are to the controversial defensive end.
Jones has recently been criticized for supporting Hardy after he broke into the special teams huddle to berate his teammates after they gave up a decisive 100-yard kickoff return by New York's Dwayne Harris.
Following the game Sunday, Jones cited Hardy as one of the "real leaders on this team, and he earns it with respect from all of his teammates, and that's the kind of thing that inspires a football team."
Hardy, who was suspended by the NFL after being convicted in 2014 of assault on a female and communicating threats - but later had the charges dismissed, has been widely accused of 'being out of control.' Many have also wondered if the Cowboys would discipline him for his aggressive actions.
"What you see on sidelines - it's gives you an unfettered and very transparent aspect of what goes on with a team." Jones told 105.3 The Fan.
In regards to Jerry Jones being an "enabler" for an aggressive Hardy, "they said that when I signed him." said Jones. "I understand completely their perspective, and they know, that in no way, is anybody but against any type of domestic violence -- we're talking about the sideline."
Jones was also criticized for calling Hardy a 'leader of the team'.
"Real leaders are really outstanding football players - and they get it done. Through that they earn a great deal of respect from their teammates," said Jones. "And since Greg got here, though his efforts, his basic aggressiveness, his absolute must to play the game and his position - when he talks you listen."
To put an exclamation point on his support of Hardy, Jones spoke of a long-term commitments. "He certainly has the kind of skills and impact that we want to look to the future with - with the Cowboys."
