IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - As the Cowboys went through their final day of this week's OTAs on Wednesday on one of their Valley Ranch practice fields, the other practice field was occupied, too, with a tryout for veteran street free-agent cornerback Brandon Boykin.

I've characterized this as a "tire kick,'' but it was a lengthy one, with Cowboys coaching and personnel-department staffers observing the workout of a player who in 2013 was a standout Eagles playmaker with six interceptions.

Boykin, 5-10 and looking more weight-room strong than his listed 176 pounds (an observation made my me and assorted staffers) doesn't have a fitness problem. But he may be dealing with a reported "degenerative'' issue in his hip or leg. (Boykin asserts that there is no problem, and that misinformation spread by Steelers DB coach Carnell Lake is the source of this angle.)

The Cowboys are certainly interested in knowing more there, but this should be not taken as reflective as an issue elsewhere on the roster, where, among other things, cornerback Mo Claiborne has had a fine spring and slot corner Orlando Scandrick is rehabbing on schedule and has taken some walk-through snaps in recent weeks. Nevertheless, a Cowboys source tells me the idea of adding Boykin is in the "discussion stages.''
