Cowboys Injuries: Romo Sits, Mo & Melton Work
IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) -- I bumped into Tony Romo on the way to Monday morning's Cowboys practice.
Well, I was on the way to practice. The Dallas QB -- sacked three times Saturday night in a preseason loss at Miami -- was on his way to not practicing.
There's no reason for alarm here. The Cowboys are 13 days away from their regular-season opener against the 49ers, and Romo taking rest days as part of his ramp-up following December back surgery is now expected.
And in fact, he wasn't hobbled, limping, grimacing or exhibiting any other troublesome signs as the team prepares to close its preseason on Thursday against Denver, a game in which Romo is not likely to participate.
The Cowboys got two more positive signs during the non-padded practice: defensive tackle Henry Melton (groin) and cornerback Mo Claiborne (shoulder) -- two key starters who have done little this summer -- worked with the first team. Both may get some snaps against the Broncos.
Among the defensive players unable to go today: end George Selvie (shoulder), corner B.W. Webb (hip) and safety Jakar Hamilton (hamstring).
Also not practicing: Dwayne Harris (hip and ankle) and running back Joseph Randle (oblique muscle), who is in a job battle with Ryan Williams, who appeared to be participating on some level today after cramping up Saturday.
NFL teams will cut from 90 to 75 by Tuesday at 3 p.m. DFW time and the Cowboys have made two of their moves with the release of fullback J.C. Copeland and end Martez Wilson.
