OXNARD, Calif. (105.3 THE FAN) – We reported on Monday night on 105.3 The Fan that Chris Whaley was facing another season-ending injury - this time to his "lower extremities'' - and today it's official, the young defensive tackle traveling back to DFW for eventual surgery after sustaining a torn Achilles.

The injury has some impact on the Cowboys, though they have particular depth along the defensive line. Of infinitely more importance is that Whaley, the former University of Texas standout, will now be facing another demanding rehab as he missed his entire rookie season (after signing with Dallas as a UDFA) with a torn ACL sustained during his senior season with the Longhorns.

The Cowboys got better news on the injury front to open Tuesday's practice as running back Joe Randle (oblique), tackle Doug Free (foot), defensive end Tank Lawrence (back) and quarterback Tony Romo (following a day of rest) were among the participants as the team prepares for its preseason opener Thursday at San Diego.
