Couple: Power Company Pruning Crew Acted Without Permission

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A Preston Hollow couple is threatening to sue Oncor after intruders broke into their fenced backyard and cut the limbs off their trees.

"I don't like that people were in my yard without my permission," said homeowner Andrew Nall.

He and his wife Courtney said they couldn't believe their eyes when they saw what the intruders were doing.

"I heard some things going on in the middle of the night," said Nall, who confronted the workers on-camera.

Turns out, a crew from Oncor was causing the ruckus. But the couple didn't hire anyone. The utility company sent crews that night after fallen limbs knocked out power to several homes in the Preston Hollow neighborhood.

The couple called police but didn't receive the response they wanted.

"The police told us they were allowed to be there and they were not trespassing and we told them that we did not want them on our property," said Nall.

By the time the chainsaws stopped on Thursday, the Nall's said their mature trees were sheared beyond recognition.

"These trees are part of the reason we bought this house," said Nall. "We never like trimming any trees."

Oncor said the trimming was necessary to restore power and homeowners who resisted crews on their property were only hurting others.

"It's not just the power to this particular customer but power to the neighborhood but the safety of all those living around it," said Oncor spokesperson Kris Spears.

The Nall's said they are planning to file a suit against Oncor for damaging their property.  The electricity provider said it had workers knock on the front door but no one answered.

Oncor couldn't cite any law that allows utility companies to trespass on private property when asked.
