Couple Left For Dead By Hit-And-Run Driver
ROANOKE (CBSDFW.COM) - A Roanoke couple says a driver left them for dead after crashing into their motorcycle on Friday night.
"We landed on the car and then rolled off the driver's side of the car, and that's when I made contact with the ground," Silas Knaust explains.
The couple was traveling northbound on the service road off of IH-35W to eastbound 170. That's when they say a driver slammed into them from behind.
"That person left us there like we were an animal," says Stacy Humes, the passenger on the bike.
Together they have put 9,000 miles on Knaust's new 2015 Harley. They say their journey on this earth nearly came to an end on Friday.
Humes flew out of her shoes from the impact. Neither was wearing a helmet. They acknowledge how fortunate they are to have survived.
Humes has serious bruises and cuts to her face, as well as swelling down the side of her body. Knaust has road rash all over his stomach and arm, and says his neck and back are injured as well.
Witnesses reported seeing the driver responsible get out of the car to take a look at the aftermath and then flee.
"The guy came and stopped and got back in the car and left," explains Knaust.
The witnesses who stayed behind, didn't get a plate number but believe the driver may have been behind the wheel of a silver Volkswagen Jetta. The vehicle should have front end damage on the driver's side. There could be damage to the windshield as well.
As for Knaust's 2015 Harley Davidson bike, it's going to need a lot of work. Knaust says it is worth about $27,000. And now their medical bills are starting to pile up.
"It's tough financially," Silas says.
He hopes the person responsible has insurance and will do the right thing.
"We wouldn't wish this upon nobody."
