DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- Tyson Chandler, a member of the Mavericks' 2011 NBA Championship team, returned to Dallas this offseason. Could another beloved Mav be nearing a return?

ESPN reports that the Minnesota Timberwolves are finalizing a buyout with and will waive veteran guard JJ Barea. If Barea -- who is scheduled to make $4.5 million this season -- clears waivers, he will become a free agent.

Marc Stein reports that Dallas has interest in re-signing Barea, though it would need to clear a roster spot before doing so.

Barea, a fan favorite, averaged 8.9 points per game in Dallas' playoff run in 2011. The 6-foot reserve guard had a personal postseason high 22 points in the "Mother's Day Massacre", a series clinching Game 4 win over the Lakers.

He also carved up Miami for 17 and 15 points in the final two title-clinching games.

The Mavericks appear set at point guard, with Jameer Nelson, Devin Harris, Raymond Felton, and Gal Mekel currently on the roster. Mekel appears likely to be cut if the Mavs opt to sign Barea.
