Coppell Teen Recovering After Being Shot

COPPELL (CBSDFW.COM) - An arrest is expected to be made soon in the shooting of a former Coppell High School football star. It happened shortly after 6 pm Sunday at Coppell Middle School, located in the 4100 block of Mockingbird Lane.
Police said that Charles West was playing basketball at the middle school when he was shot in the upper left arm. West was rushed to Parkland Hospital in Dallas and later sent the following message to let everybody know that he was okay.

West is already home from the hospital. Police have not released a name or mugshot of the person they arrested, pending identification through a witness line-up. Sgt. Sammy Lujon confirms the suspect is an 18 or 19-year-old adult male and was arrested at an apartment complex Monday afternoon. Sgt. Lujon says no other suspects are believed to be involved.
The motive for the shooting is not yet clear. Police are now talking to witnesses who were with the 18-year-old football player at the middle school.
According to a spokesman for the Coppell Police Department, there is cell phone video of the incident that was posted online on Sunday night. The video has since been taken down, but detectives are trying to find the individual who shot that footage.
"In watching the video, we are just glad that it was after school, summer -- no summer school, no band and nobody else was hurt," said Sgt. Sammy Lujan with the Coppell Police Department.
West was arrested back in February and accused of sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint. His attorney stated that the accusations were not true. The arrest came just days after West had committed to play football for Brigham Young University, a school with a strict honor code.
Detectives have not connected the sexual assault case to Sunday night's shooting, but have also not ruled out a possible link between the two cases.
