GARLAND (CBSDFW) - Eight of the people killed in this weekend's tornado died in Garland. One school's effort to help families of students is now a much bigger relief effort.

Lakeview Centennial High School is just a few blocks north of the Garland neighborhood hardest-hit by this weekend's deadly tornado.

The principal put out an informal call for help for families of students. Volunteers like Allison Cole were shocked at the immediate response. Donations of food, bottled water, clothes, and toys, are stacked six feet deep in some part of the school.

"I am a student here and I am also on the varsity drill team. And so a bunch of us came to help out and just support the community and help families in need" said Cole.

Everything which isn't needed by families in the neighborhood will be passed on to the Red Cross, to help other families affected by Saturday's storms.
