DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Towering above an area now popular for dining out or scoring a sweet vintage find,  the Lakewood Theater off Abrams Road opened in 1938 as a segregated movie house.

Today the Dallas Landmark Commission voted unanimously in favor of designating it a historical building;  maintaining its architectural integrity.

"Landmark designation is not an impediment to a thriving building or use. We are seeking a conversation with them to help make that happen," said Joanna Hampton of the Old East Dallas Association of Neighborhoods.

A neighborhood campaign was set off weeks ago after images spread via social media of construction crews tossing theater seats into dumpsters. Since then, many Lakewood residents rallied, expressing concerns about the possibility of any aesthetic changes made to the now 77 year old building. Petitions were signed and the "Save the Lakewood" effort began.

Today marks a victory for the campaign.
