Colleyville Cop Shoots At Man With Knife

COLLEYVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - An officer in Colleyville on Friday morning shot at a man who was wielding a butcher knife and threatening to commit suicide. It happened at around 8:00 a.m. in the 7600 block of Leasburg Drive, in the northwest part of the city.
According to investigators at the scene, the man's mom called 911 saying that her son was trying to kill himself with the butcher knife. Dispatchers reportedly heard the woman saying "please don't kill yourself." When four officers arrived at the home, the 32-year-old man was still holding the knife.
Police said that the man began stabbing himself, and the officers attempted to intervene. A struggle ensued, and one of the officers tried to use a TASER to subdue the suicidal man. But, for some reason, it did not work. At that point, one of the officers fired his gun one time.
"He fired his weapon in an effort to stop the actions of the subject," explained Assistant Chief Robert Hinton with the Colleyville Police Department. "Where and if he hit the subject is to be determined, but we are trained to stop whatever action the subject or suspect is doing at the time."
The shot may have struck the man in the hand, or missed entirely. That part of the case is still under investigation.
After the shot was fired, and still failed to stop the man's dangerous actions, another officer was able to successfully use a TASER on him. He was transported to a nearby hospital by air ambulance in serious condition. His name has not yet been released.
"Unbelievable," said neighbor Cindy Warner upon hearing the news Friday. "I'm very sad to hear that they had to shoot him. Kind of thought that might be a little aggressive."
The officer who fired shots has been placed on paid administrative leave. He has been with the department for around four or five years. "Under state law, officers can use force to stop a subject from attempting suicide," said Hinton.
