Coach Rhonda Rompola Retiring After 35 Seasons With SMU Women

DALLAS (AP) - SMU coach Rhonda Rompola is retiring after 35 seasons in the program, the last 25 as head coach for the Mustangs.
Rompola announced her decision Monday. The Mustangs (12-14) have three regular-season games left, including her final home game Saturday against Houston after Wednesday's game at No. 1 UConn.
The 55-year-old Rompola has been part of 35 of the 40 seasons SMU has had women's basketball, getting to the Hilltop after transferring from Old Dominion. Rompola played one season (1981-82), helped the coaches for a year while finishing school and then was an assistant for eight seasons before becoming head coach in 1991.
Rompola has a 438-314 record as head coach, including seven NCAA Tournament berths. The last was 2008, when the Mustangs had a program-record 24 wins.
