Cleanup At Denton Confederate Soldiers Memorial Continues

DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - On Monday, workers in Denton tried horse cleaner and today they are trying baking soda to clean up a memorial to confederate soldiers vandalized over the weekend.
Someone spray-painted "This is Racist" in red letters on the statue, that's located on the grounds of the Denton County Courthouse. Faint red smudges were still visible on the marble and granite memorial Tuesday.
Peggy Riddle, the director of the Denton County Office of History and Culture, said officials there has expected something like this to happen, because some had voiced concerns the Confederate Soldier Memorial it was causing racial tension. "We really don't have racial problems. We work together to explain the bad parts of our past. We think this was probably just a random thing."
Riddle said even if vandals strike again the memorial won't be removed. "The monument cannot be moved, it's protected by federal laws and state laws. And it would probably destroy it if it was moved."
Security cameras recorded two people in the Denton Town Square, tagging the memorial. Riddle says damage repair costs could be as much as $50,000.
