City Refuses To Release Findings In Firefighter's Death Investigation

DALLAS (CBS 11) -- The city of Dallas has told the widow of a fallen firefighter that it can not release the findings of his death because of an ongoing "criminal investigation" into possible arson.

In response to a "demand" letter from Jenny Wilson's lawyer asking for information into the death of Stan Wilson, the city responded by saying to do so would "compromise" the criminal investigation.

CBS 11's I-Team has for months been investigating the death of Stan Wilson, a veteran Dallas fireman who was ordered back into a burning building that subsequently collapsed on him and other firefighters.

In its investigation, the I-Team has been told by multiple sources in the fire department that Wilson should have never been ordered back into the burning apartment complex to search for trapped victims.

The building had already been searched, with no one found inside, the I-Team has been told.

Sources also said the fire was too intense, and the building was already teetering from aerial water streams pounding the top of it, making it unsafe to go back inside.

Jenny Wilson told the I-Team it is the second time she has been told by the city that releasing information could hurt an ongoing investigation into the possibility that an arsonist started the fire that killed her husband more than 14 months ago.

Both she and her attorney, Barry Hasten, told the I-Team they question whether the city and the Dallas Fire department are simply attempting to stall the release of the report.

If, in fact, there is a criminal investigation underway, then Stan Wilson is the victim of "capital murder," and his family should be made aware of at least some of the details, Hasten told the I-Team.
