City of Coppell restores water supply, rescinds boil notice
COPPELL (CBSNewsTexas.com) — The boil water advisory is over for residents in Coppell.
Wednesday morning, when the City of Coppell's over 43,000 residents went to brush their teeth, they found little or no water coming out of their faucets.
"Like 5 o'clock in the morning, we didn't have water at all," resident Malini Ratnayake explained. "We have a 5-year-old grandson and we didn't know what to do."
The city discovered the Village Parkway Pump Station, Coppell's primary source of water, had lost power due to a fallen power line. The backup power source worked for a few hours but burned out due to the heat.
Subsequently, the city had to issue a boil water notice.
"They said not to drink it or use it for brushing teeth," said Jim, who didn't give his last name. "I used it for washing my hands, I hope I'm OK."
On the hottest day of the year, residents were told to boil the water before washing their hands and face, brushing their teeth or drinking it.
"I woke up early this morning, went to the city gym and that's the first I heard about it, " said resident David Lacky. "I was checking in and they said, 'Gym's closed. No water.'"
Oncor was able to restore power to the system by mid-day Wednesday; however, the boil water notice remained in effect while they tested to make sure the water is safe.
Thursday morning, the City of Coppell received the water sample results from Trinity River Authority (TRA), and the samples meet Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requirements, meaning residents may once again use water as normal.
