Citizens Encouraged To Attend Dallas Southern Gateway Project Meeting

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - There is a bold new plan being proposed for one of the busiest highways in North Texas – Interstate-35E and US 67 in southern Dallas County.
The Southern Gateway Project is pushing to develop "long-term transportation and operational improvements in the area."
Right now the highway plan is just a wish list for the area, but if executed from concept to completion it would mean connecting the Dallas Zoo to the Oak Cliff area.
Some of the proposals by the project, organized by a group of citizens, include a Klyde Warren-style deck park over I-35E to reconnect both sides of Oak Cliff. The group is also proposing putting highway lanes below ground, like those currently on Central Expressway.
There has also been talk of making some of the lanes managed, or toll lanes. So far, residents have been very vocal about hating that idea.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has long had plans to expand I-35E through Oak Cliff. Officials with the agency say they are currently still considering ideas about the design.
Over the past year a series of public meetings have been held and another will take place this evening. In addition to an overview of the proposed project, the community meeting, sponsored by the East Kessler Park Neighborhood Association, the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League, and the Dallas Homeowners League, will give citizens a chance to present questions to elected officials and the project's manager.
The 6:30 p.m. meeting is being held at the Hitt Auditorium at Methodist Hospital Central. The facility is located at 1441 N. Beckley Avenue in Dallas.
