Chandler Parsons Struggles In Mavs Debut

SAN ANTONIO (CBSDFW.COM) -- It wasn't exactly the performance the Mavs envisioned when they signed forward Chandler Parsons to a three-year, $46 million contract this offseason.
Five points on 2-of-10 shooting in 34 minutes.
But the good news -- it's just one game.
"Me personally, I've got to step up,'' Parsons conceded after his Mavericks debut, a 101-100 loss in San Antonio. "I can't have too many more nights like that."
Parsons had the opportunity to erase his sub-par performance with one shot -- a three-point look with .4 seconds remaining from the top of the key. His shot hit the front of the rim, sealing the Spurs one-point win.
Afterwards, the 26-year-old reflected on the decision to pull the trigger, instead wondering if he should have deferred to a waiting Monta Ellis -- who hit 11-of-21 shots on the night.
"It felt great. It was kind of a broken play where I got a good look," said Parsons. "Looking back on it, I may need to make an extra pass to Monta, but I didn't know exactly how much time was left. I'll take that shot any day at the end of the game, and I just have to step up and knock it down next time."
Head coach Rick Carlisle didn't seem bothered by Parsons debut, which also included four rebounds, a block and two steals.
"He's going to be fine," said Carlisle. "I like an awful lot of things he did do. It's one game. He will bounce back on Thursday, and we're going to be better."
Parsons will have the opportunity to rebound on Thursday night against Utah in his debut at the American Airlines Center.
Dirk Nowitzki believes Parsons is still getting accustomed to his new teammates -- and he expects that he'll be better.
"It's not a one-game season; there's 82 games in a season," said Nowitzki. "He will grow and get better."
