Physician wounded after gunman opens fire inside Cedar Hill medical building, police say
CEDAR HILL (CBSNewsTexas.com) — Cedar Hill police are investigating after a shooting left one person injured inside a medical clinic Tuesday afternoon.
It happened around 12:20 p.m. July 25 at the Methodist Family Health Center in the 900 block of E. Belt Line Road.
Cedar Hill Police Chief Ely Reyes said when officers arrived, they found a physician on the ground and wounded. He was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center where he has since been released.
Police also reportedly saw the suspected shooter leave in a black Chrysler sedan before he crashed it into another vehicle about a block away.
After the wreck, as many as five officers caught up with the suspect, spotting him with a "long gun," and subsequently shot at him and the car. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition while the traumatic scene led some nearby businesses to close for the day.
"When they started shooting, I started crawling into the store where I work at," witness Charlie Walker said.
Authorities removed the long gun found on the suspect and have spent hours trying to piece together the motive behind the shooting, as well as the police response that left the suspect's car riddled with bullet holes.
There are multiple videos that will be reviewed as part of this investigation, and all the officers involved have since been placed on administrative leave.
The suspect's identity remains publicly unknown at this time and the Methodist Family Health Center will remain closed through at least the rest of the week. A spokesperson for the center sent out a statement Wednesday, saying in part:
"The doctor, who has served Cedar Hill and the surrounding communities for decades, is asking for privacy for himself and the clinic staff. He would like to thank the community for their support and the team at Methodist Dallas for the excellent care he received."
