FORT WORTH (CBS11) – For the first time ever Fort Worth Police invited members of the media to participate in a hands-on shooting training at their simulated city inside the police training center.

"One of the goals of training is to get as close to real as possible," said Sgt. Eddy Trinidad.

Training officers put me through three separate scenarios where use of force came into play.

The first scenario was a domestic disturbance call where a man pulled a gun on me and I ended up shooting him.

The second scenario was a traffic stop. No guns or shooting there; just uncooperative people.

Lastly, a role-player carrying a rifle walked into a would-be school with the intent to hurt children. In that case I also made the decision to shoot.

"We want to show you how it can happen so quickly," explained Sgt. Trinidad.

Although I have never had police training before, the lesson was clear… most police shooting happen in a split second.

Fort Worth Police say they routinely train on these situations in hopes that officers are well versed on when to shoot and not to shoot.
