PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - It was a simple car burglary, but it put a teenage victim's future in jeopardy.
Katie Thomas was heading to class at Plano West Senior High School on Tuesday morning. But when the 17-year-old student arrived, she was missing her backpack with important schoolwork.
The girl and her father decided to check the family's outdoor security camera from the night before. They noticed a young man with a dog circling the car before opening a door and making off with valuables, including the backpack.
Thomas is an accomplished mechanical engineering student who has been recognized by the City of Plano. She must now redo some schoolwork for which she had hoped to receive college credit. "My backpack and my textbooks," Thomas explained, "are incredibly important to me because I'm using some of the items to get college credit for classes."
The family is also worried because the thief made off with a garage door opener and a back gate opener.
