British Ebola Survivor Donating Blood To Patient In Atlanta
ATLANTA (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — An Ebola survivor says he's in Atlanta to donate blood to an American patient.
British nurse William Pooley was reached at his Atlanta hotel Thursday night and said he was in the country to donate blood to a patient being treated at Emory University Hospital. Pooley contracted Ebola while he was working in Sierra Leone.
Pooley and hospital officials have declined to identify the American patient or detail his condition.
Some patients have been given Ebola survivors' blood in an experimental approach that some scientists think can help people fight off the virus. After being released from the hospital, Fort Worth Dr. Kent Brantly donated a unit of blood to treat Dr. Rick Sacra, an American aid volunteer who had been working in Liberia.
The United Nation's World Health Organization reports that the disease is believed to have sickened more than 5,300 people, and has killed more than 2,600.
