DALLAS (CBS11) - Hit by a driver who police said sped off, investigators on Tuesday began their search for the driver of a black SUV who they say slammed into a three-year-old little boy.

Police said the boy was hit after darting across the street at the family's apartment complex. They said he ran across the road to greet a family member. Investigators said the driver of an SUV hit the boy and then took off without seeing if he was okay.

"It just breaks my heart. It breaks my heart. You just really never know," said Erica Johnson, who helped drive the family to the hospital after the incident. "Why wouldn't you just stop and see what's going on to see how you can help?"

Being that the hit-and-run happened inside the apartment complex, Johnson and other feel it might be possible the driver responsible is a neighbor to the family.
"It makes me sad. It makes me sad. It makes me really hurt about it and I hope justice can be served," said Johnson.

Dallas Police said officers describe the driver as an Asian male with curly hair. The passenger is described as an Asian female. The SUV they were in did not have a luggage rack.

Family members of the victim said the boy is currently recovering in the hospital. They said he broke multiple bones in his hips, had internal bleeding and damage to his liver.
