DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A North Texas lawmaker is proposing a bill that would allow Dallas to opt-out of open carry.

Representative Eric Johnson says he believes open carry should be decided at the local level and that he believes big cities like Dallas, are more at risk for potential danger when open carry is allowed.

"Open carry is a bad idea in my personal opinion from a public safety standpoint but I'm not a police chief… and I'm not on the Dallas City Council, but I do believe that's where that decision should lie," said Johnson.

Now that the bill was proposed, Johnson says the next step is to have a discussion about it in front of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee.
