Breast Cancer Awareness Month In DFW

Ready to hit the streets in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness? If you want to get involved, there are many ways to contribute this year. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the DFW area is bustling with races, events and commemorations to help fund the unending research and fight for the lives of those fighting breast cancer. Whether or not you want to contribute with athleticism, creativity or just your pocket book, here are some great ways you can make a difference.

Sign up and start getting your team together now! Likely to be the most well-known and widely-recognized event held for breast cancer awareness, the "Susan G. Komen 3 Day" will be held in the DFW area from Nov. 6- 8, uniting thousands and thousands of participants and their supporters. It might seem a lofty goal to walk for three days, but there is enough encouragement here to walk for many more. The event will begin this year in Plano. If you want a truly feel-good way of contributing that doesn't require gazelle-like running skills, join the three day and prove something to yourself and the world.

A newer concept, a virtual run can be the best option for someone who wants to do a charitable athletic event but has a complicated schedule. Virtual runs can be completed any day before the race end date. They can be conducted anywhere the runner wishes as well, even on a treadmill. Participants will receive medals mailed out within two weeks of the event.

This event is still a few months out, but tickets are selling now. For nearly a decade now, the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo will be supporting breast cancer awareness by encouraging attendees and participants to wear all pink and by donating 50 percent of the proceeds for tickets for the date of Jan. 27 to the cause. Breast cancer survivors can get free vouchers to the evening's events by registering as survivors online at the Komen Greater Fort Worth's site. For the first time, the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo will also be offering a VIP Pink Experience including a reception, commemorative pin and rodeo ticket, also available online. Let's try to exceed last year's donation of over $20,000 by heading to the rodeo!

Saturday, Oct. 31

For those who want to use their sweat for good, there's another fun option for Breast Cancer Awareness, combined with the spirit of Halloween. This Halloween, October 31st, you can help out this worthy cause by signing up for a 5K or 10K virtually. A new concept for many, this means that you can participate just about anywhere, not necessarily on the same track or course at the same time as other participants. With the registration price of only $18, each runner will get a "I Ain't Afraid" medal and know that they personally contributed at least $4 directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
