AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Austin police say an officer has been shot and a suspect is dead at the scene.

Police said Sunday that the officer is in stable condition.

The incident happened in downtown Austin.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said shortly before 11:00 a.m. a security guard saw a man acting suspiciously possibly breaking into vehicles near a pizza place.

An officer saw the security guard chasing a suspect and called for back up. The officer got out of the patrol car and tried to get control of suspect.

Police say the suspect, without warning, took out a semi-automatic pistol and fired one shot at officer hitting him below his vest in lower right abdomen. The officer returned fire and the suspect died at scene, according  to police.

Police say the officer, a nine-year veteran, has undergone surgery to have the bullet removed.  The officer is shaken up but in good spirits.
