Man In Jacket With 'Police' On Back Kills Armored Vehicle Security Officer During Robbery

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police officers are searching for a man and his female accomplice after an armored vehicle security guard was shot and killed outside a Neighborhood Credit Union Monday morning.

Jose Montes, 28, was killed by the robber wearing a black jacket with the word "police" written on the back.

It happened in the 1500 block of Cockrell Hill. When officers arrived, they found Montes laying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

Witnesses said he was servicing an ATM at the credit union when the suspect approached carrying a rifle and demanded property. At some point, the robber shot Montes and was seen taking duffle bags from the armored vehicle. Police examined the van for fingerprints but it's unclear what leads they have gathered.

The suspect then fled the scene in a sedan driven by the woman.

The vehicle is a white Volkswagen Passat.

Dallas Fire-Rescue transported Montes to a local hospital where he subsequently died from his injuries.

"Sounds desperate and it's a shame. Any crime where you have to shoot anybody is sad," said Sgt. Warren Mitchell a spokesman for the Dallas Police Department. "Our heart goes out to the family of the security officer. We are definitely gonna keep him in our prayers and we ask that you all do the same."

A second armed security officer was present but was not injured.

Dallas Police are asking that anyone with information regarding this shooting contact Detective McDaniel #8890 with the Dallas Police Department Special Investigations Unit or tonya.mcdaniel@dallascityhall.com. Please reference case #163605-2020.
