Armored Car Spills Cash Along Interstate 20

WEATHERFORD (CBSDFW.COM) - An armored truck lost some of its expensive load while traveling along Interstate 20 in Weatherford, much to the delight of the drivers who followed after.
Weatherford Police say around 2:55 PM, they started receiving calls about drivers stopping along I-20 to pick up loose cash scattered along the runway and median. By the time officers arrived, they found small amounts of money along the roadway with some of the drivers who had picked up some of the cash.
"There was a lot of money flowing around there. Some people had hand fulls and it was all crumpled up," said Joel Aldrige, who shot video of the money grab and posted it on Facebook. "It looked like an easter egg hunt. They were bent over picking up stuff."
Police say the bills came from a Brinks Armored Truck, which was traveling westbound on I-20, with an open side passenger door. According to a statement, a "substantial amount of cash fell out of the truck" between mile markers 410 and 413. All of the money was originally packaged in a clear, plastic bag.
Weatherford Police are reminding drivers who picked up the cash that that it belongs to Brinks and asking people to return it.
"That money belongs to the Brinks armored car company and any money that is picked up and not turned into Brinks or the Weatherford Police Department, a criminal prosecution could ensue," said Weatherford Police Commander Ronnie Villareal.
Police also warned against people trying to go to the area and look for cash.
"At one point,the interstate had shut down because there were so many people stopped and picking up money," said Villareal.
Aldridge says although it may have been tempting for some to get out and grab some money too, he just kept rolling past the scene.
"I noticed people stopping on the highway running in front of me and there were people ahead of me . I kind of wanted to get out of there. It was crazy."
As of Friday night, Weatherford Police said many people have returned money they scooped up on the side of the highway.
