North Texas Man Arrested In Alabama For Murder, Kidnapping In Georgia Waives Extradition

SELMA, Alabama (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A man from Arlington, Texas arrested in Alabama after a murder in south Georgia has agreed to return to Georgia to face charges, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

Demonte Everette Mayes Jr., 23, waived extradition during a hearing in Dallas County, Alabama and will be sent to Americus, Georgia, to answer charges including murder and kidnapping, said District Attorney Michael Jackson.

Mayes was arrested in west Alabama on Saturday in the shooting death of 21-year-old La'Warrior Gardener.

The man died at a hospital after being found with gunshot wounds at a house.

Mayes fled Georgia with his 2-month-old son, and authorities spotted the man's vehicle because of an alert issued for the child, authorities said.

Mayes was stopped while driving along a rural stretch of highway.

The child was placed into the custody of child welfare officials in Alabama, Jackson said.
