Arlington Man Charged In Deadly Fireworks Accident
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - An Arlington man is facing a felony prohibited weapon charge, after an fireworks experiment turned deadly.
Dustin Louis, 23, and his friend Jared Backus, 24, were taking apart commercial fireworks in an attempt to make a larger explosive, according to police.
On August 28, the men were working in the garage of a home in the 2600 block of Hedgeapple Drive in Arlington. According to the arrest warrant, they were taking store-bought fireworks apart and pouring the flash powder into a metal container. The experiment led to an explosion, which killed Backus.
When police responded to the scene, they found Lewis outside the garage. He was conscious with second-degree burns on his body.
Backus was found in the garage. He was deceased, with metal fragments embedded in his body. Police estimate the explosion threw his body at least six feet.
Louis told police he didn't know what caused the explosion. Police say the manner in which the men were handling the explosives, they created something similar to a pipe bomb.
Louis has been booked and released on $2,500 bond.
