HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM) - It's championship weekend for high school football across the state and some of those competing for titles are from North Texas.

NRG Stadium in Houston is the site of the first game involving one of four local teams. The Class 4A Division I game between Argyle High School and Waco La Vega kicks off at noon Friday.

Argyle players aren't strangers to this stage, but for student athletes at two Mansfield schools and ones at Frisco Lone Star High this championship weekend is new and ultra exciting.

That excitement has spread from athletes, to students, to fans. On Thursday, Mansfield ISD held a pep rally to celebrate Lake Ridge High School, which will take the field tonight at 8.

The Lake Ridge team includes this year's Tom Landry Award winner Jett Duffey.

The enthusiasm in Mansfield is palpable, so much so the school district actually released students from classes early today so they could make the trip to Houston in time for kickoff.

Mansfield Lake Ridge competes in the Class 5A Division I state championship against Richmond George Ranch High at 8 p.m.

The other North Texas school making headlines is Frisco Lone Star which is looking for its district crown as well after winning five straight playoff games.

Frisco Lone Star will take the field against Cedar Park, for the Class 5A Division II title, at noon on Saturday.
