Are The Cowboys Really Searching For Cornerbacks?

DALLAS (The Fan) - While it's wise to retain membership in the "Never-Say-Never Club,''  it's even more wise to heed the words of trusted Cowboys executives themselves when chasing down rumors.

So it is with Dallas' post-Orlando Scandrick-injury plans.

Amid national tales that have Dallas shopping for cornerback help, two Cowboys execs have answered my questions by calling "B.S.'' on the reports. The specific words of one:

"No. Look at our depth, who we just drafted, and our hopes for the sixth pick in the draft a few years ago.''

Here, in a nutshell (or four) is where Dallas stands personnel-wise after Scandrick's season-ending knee injury:

1. Carr will start at one corner. Claiborne ill get the first crack at the other starting job.

2. Patmon will back up Claiborne and will push him. Corey White will mostly line up behind Carr on the left side and might also help as a safety and in the Dime.

3. Patmon will be the slot corner on Saturday against the Vikings with a chance to win that job.

4. Notice a missing name? When my source mentions "our depth,'' he's talking about Patmon and White. When he mentions "hope for the sixth pick,'' he's talking about Claiborne.

And of course, when he mentions "who we just drafted,'' he's talking about prized rookie Byron Jones, who, with all his gifts, merits being mentioned fifth in line right now at cornerback.

Are there street-free-agent cornerbacks working down at the hardware store who are superior to Dallas' fifth corner? My "Never-Say-Never Club'' membership card is tucked conveniently in my wallet, just in case. But the obvious answer — and the Cowboys' answer — is "no.''
