Arcade-Style DWI Simulator Offers "Real Life" Lessons

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - The Plano Police Department will rollout a new, arcade-style DWI "pod" video game in two weeks to educate people about the dangers of drunk driving or texting.
"It's basically real life," said Plano police spokesman David Tilley. "You are going to experience it first-hand without the dangers of injury."
Power points and work sheets just weren't cutting it, according to police. Thus, the department received funds from a grant to buy the high-tech simulator.
It's the only one in use in the Dallas-area, according to the pod's inventor, Otto Glenewinkel, Texas StateUniversity Police Department (UPD) crime prevention specialist and executive director of Driving While Intoxicated Pod (DWI) Corporation.
The Plano Police Department made 835 DWI arrests and there were 205 DWI-related crashes last year.
"It's a big problem," according to Tilley.
And the DWI simulator doesn't just make a game of driving while intoxicated; a texting simulation is also offered.
"You're not just hearing about it, you're not just reading it, you're experiencing it," said Tilley.
