NEW YORK (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Apple for the first time is accepting damaged iPhones as a trade-in from people wanting to upgrade.

Until now, Apple offered $350 in credit to iPhone owners only if the device had an intact screen and working buttons. For damaged phones, it will pay $50 for a 5s, $200 for a 6 and $250 for a 6 Plus.

North Texas residents can trade in their old iPhones at any of the six Apple stores in Dallas, Fort Worth, Frisco, Plano or Southlake. They  will also now be able to get screen protectors installed at Apple stores.

It's hoped that with more leeway, as the trade in is applicable only to iPhone 5 and later models, more people will be encouraged to upgrade to new iPhones.

There is no date for when the next iPhone will be released, but Apple is set to hold an event around March 15. Apple has not confirmed that it will release a new iPhone then but according to the blog 9to5Mac they will be unveiling a new smaller iPhone 5, the iPad Air 3 and more.
