DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - American Airlines is now having to pay a hefty fine for several plane delays that caused problems nationwide.

The Fort Worth based airline has to cough up $1.6 million because of six delayed flights at DFW Airport in February 2015.

According to reports, those six planes sat idle on the tarmac for over 3 hours. That setback played a role in 27 more flights being delayed across the country.

The Department of Transportation says 3 hours is the absolute maximum amount of time any plane can sit on the runway.
