11 hospitalized after gas leak near Lavon elementary school
LAVON (CBSNewsTexas.com) — Several students and staff members at a North Texas school were hospitalized earlier today after a gas leak occurred behind the building.
Community Independent School District (ISD) officials said that on March 29, a gas leak happened while campus renovations were going on behind NeSmith Elementary School in Lavon.
A spokesperson for the district said that gas never got into the building. They added that the leak was capped quickly, but that the district decided to have ambulances on site as a precaution.
Two students and nine staff members were hospitalized, and parents were allowed to pick up their kids early.
Gas lines to the school were shut off, and crews are working to fix them as quickly as possible. The school said it has plans in place if they can't be fixed on time to ensure lunch is served.
So far, authorities are not sure what exactly caused the leak, but believe it was likely related to construction.
The school will remain closed the rest of the week so Atmos can check the building to make sure everything is OK before the City of Lavon re-inspects the campus.
