FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Here in North Texas all eyes are on several local political races, including the Republican run for Tarrant County Sheriff.

Early Tuesday morning it was dark inside the Christ Cathedral Church, but it would be just a few hours before voters would start making their way inside.

One of the most important races taking place Tuesday is for Tarrant County Sheriff.

Incumbent Sheriff Dee Anderson is running for his fifth, and self-proclaimed final, term. You've likely seen his face in the news over the last few months, when 'affluenza' teen Ethan Couch disappeared the sheriff's office was at the forefront in the search to find him.

Anderson will face tough competition at the polls from another Republican. Bill Waybourn, who spent more than 30 years as the Dalworthington Gardens police chief, is running against him.

Waybourn has the endorsement of former governor Rick Perry, and multiple local law enforcement associations, including those in Arlington, Mansfield and Fort Worth.

During a debate last month Anderson, if re-elected, his focus would be on the more than 1,500 Tarrant County employees, running the jail properly and making sure the annual $120 million budget was put to good and proper use.

During that same debate Waybourn called himself an "upfront community guy," and said his focus would be on building relationships in the community and working more with individual police departments in Tarrant County.

There are no Democrats on the ballot running for sheriff.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
