Aunt, grandmother say mother of abandoned girl left her on child's birthday

DALLAS - Texas Department of Family and Protective Services believes it has located the family of a girl abandoned at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas Monday.

Authorities have found the family of this child who was reportedly abandoned at the Baylor emergency room in Dallas.  Texas Department of Family and Protective Services

The girl, believed to be six-years old, is still in protective custody, but the agency said "options for placing her with family members are being explored."

In an interview with Univision News 23, the girl's aunt and mother said the girl's mother was the one who dropped her off at the hospital.

"When I spoke to her mother she told me she just turned her in," the girl's aunt said. "She said 'Don't interfere with my business'."

The conversation happened, the aunt said, on the young girl's birthday.

They said the woman didn't explain why she abandoned her daughter, but said she was a drug user, suffered from mental illness, and had rejected offers from the family to help her. She didn't want to be helped though, the grandmother told Univision, because she was afraid family members would call police.

They also said the girl's father is not an option to care for her because he had been deported to Mexico four years ago.

The girl was only able to give officials her first name when she was found Monday, leading the department to ask the public for help identifying her. The first court hearing in her case is scheduled for Dec. 14, according to the agency.
