After Being Cut By Cowboys, McFadden Hangs Up His Cleats

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Running back Darren McFadden has retired from the NFL, just two days after being cut by the Dallas Cowboys.

In a statement released on Twitter, McFadden said, "I just want to say that I make this decision not with sadness or without further opportunity, but with a couple of days to reflect on how I feel and where I am at this stage of life. I know that this is the right move for me."

The former Arkansas Razorback spent seven seasons with the Oakland Raiders and three with the Cowboys.

McFadden took over the Cowboys starting running back role when DeMarco Murray left for the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2014 season. In 16 games with Dallas in 2015, McFadden ran for 1,089 yards and three touchdowns on 239 carries.

Things changed for McFadden after the season, however, as the Cowboys used their first-round pick on Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott would go on to become the team's feature back, leaving McFadden as a back up for 2016.

In 2017, McFadden was surprisingly made inactive to begin the season in favor of Alfred Morris and Rod Smith. Despite Elliott beginning to serve a six-game suspension in week 10, McFadden still couldn't get on the field.

Dallas and the running back decided it was best to part ways on Sunday.

The 30-year-old was the fourth overall pick by Oakland in 2008 out of Arkansas. He finished with 5,421 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns.

McFadden was expected to try and continue his career following his release from the Cowboys, but he seems to have reversed course.

McFadden later joined Ben and Skin on 105.3 The Fan and said he was disappointed and had considered retirement after being made inactive throughout the season.

When asked if he had an opportunity to join another team, McFadden says his agent received a call from one NFL general manager after his release from Dallas, but he decided it was best to walk away.

So, what will he do the former running back do next? Well, he knows that his alma mater is looking for its next head coach.

In the meantime, McFadden told Ben and Skin that he was going to take some time to relax and would make some decisions shortly.
