DALLAS (CBSDFW/1080 KRLD) - The man who stabbed a woman with a screwdriver at an Irving health club last year has been declared insane...after he was found fit to stand trial for his alleged crime.
Since a woman was attacked with a screwdriver at the 24-Hour Fitness in Irving last year, Phillip Roberts has been declared mentally ill, unable to stand trial. Until recently.
And now that he has finally been tried, a Dallas County judge has found Roberts not guilty by reason of insanity at the time of the offense.
Defense attorney Josh Healey says Roberts will be sent to a mental health facility for 30 days, and if he stays on his medication, and the doctors agree, Roberts could be released.
Witnesses say Roberts was muttering to himself when he stabbed the woman as she worked out on an elliptical machine.
