7 World Cup Questions You've Always Wanted To Ask
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Since the World Cup kicked off on Thursday, June 12, there's been a noticeable spike in soccer interest across the country.
For those who are new fans to the sport, there may be a few questions you want to ask, but didn't know where to turn.
You're in luck! SMU Men's Soccer Coach Tim McClements is answering them for you.
What is goal differential?
It is the difference between goals scored and allowed.
Why do they allow draws?
Historically games end in a draw unless you are in the knock-out stages of a competition.
Why are the last first round games played simultaneously?
This prevents any team from knowing the score-line they need to achieve in order to advance before they play.
Why does the goalie wear a different color jersey?
To distinguish him from all other players on the field.
How long does a game actually last?
90 minutes, plus any extra time (stoppage time) added by the referee. The clock does not stop for injuries or stoppage of play. Time is added at the end of the half to make up for playing time lost.
Why are there no commercials?
The game does not have any breaks other than half time.
What's considered out of bounds?
A ball is considered out of bounds when it completely crosses over the line which marks the outside perimeter of the field.
